1. A trip to Turtle Island National Park. During the peak summer months, the turtles converge in the island's shallow waters and return to the beaches of this and eight nearby islands to lay their eggs under cover of darkness.

2. Visiting Gomantong Caves. A boat ride across the bay from Sandakan, then a drive by Land Rover through 16 km of dense jungle takes you to these marvellous caves where swifts build their nests high on the walls and roofs.

3. Luxuriating in the Poring Hot Springs. Part of the Kinabalu National Park, this natural health Spa has open-air Japanese-style sulphur baths with tubs for soaking in. You can also follow walking trails and a jungle canopy walk for a monkey's eye view of the forest. Nearby is the 60 metre high canopy walk, the Langanan Waterfall and the Kepungit Waterfall.

4. Seeing the longhouses along the rivers of Sarawak and Sabah which house entire villages of some very unique native communities under a single long roof.
