Dates For The Diary: The St Lucia Carnival takes place in July every year. A riot of colour and energy, it attracts people from across the Caribbean and the world.

1. Heading inland to visit one of the island's nature reserves or plantation houses.

2. Taking a trip through the drive-in volcano at Mount Soufriere.

3. Hiking up the island's most famous landmark, Les Pitons.

4. Going on a relaxing boat trip down the island's coast to visit some of the more secluded coves and beaches.

5. Most of the island's nightlife centres around Rodney Bay with its bars and restaurants, which serve a variety of different cuisines.

6. Most resorts offer a variety of water sports and windsurfing, scuba diving and water-skiing are all readily available.

7. Every May St Lucia is serenaded by the annual Jazz Festival. Live music and shows take place across the island as artists from all over the world come to play at this world-famous event.
